New pattern: the Jolene shirtdress

list In Articles On

This summer like every summer, shirt-dresses are trendy, and I have been dreaming of a slightly fitted to the waist shirt-dress to wear during the mid-season or for the summer. Above is Jolene’s mood board and the atmosphere in which I imagined it:

Jolene is a beginning of a summer’s night, it is a romantic countryside, it is a guitar, it is the smell of a pie cooking in the oven. It is a dress we feel sexy in, even though showing so little skin.

Jolene is a shirt/shirt-dress with plenty of pretty details. Its waist slightly fitted but still comfortable to be worn in the everyday, its gathered strapped cuttings for a perfect fitting and a romantic look, and its singular buttoning for a little folk country spirit but genuinely modern. It was important for me that Jolene was not retro, my inspiration does not come from the fifties shirt-dresses. I wanted this design to be modern with just a pinch of amish, it is neo-retro.

The pattern is available in two designs – shirt – or – shirt-dress – and different options and lengths.

- Rounded or pointy collar.

- Dolman or ¾ sleeves.

- Midi length or knee-length for the dress.

- Straight or rounded peplum for the shirt.

To sew Jolene, I would advise you to use a fabric with a good body for the pointy collar version (chambray, light denim fabric), on the other hand many fabrics can adapt to the rounded collar version (batiste, middle weight viscose, chambray, light denim fabric, broderie anglaise fabric or tencel and cupro are absolutely indicated).

The pattern’s level is intermediate: the dolman sleeves version will be easier than the ¾ sleeves version, which has set-in sleeves. For the ones who are allergic to buttoning, if your sewing machine does not make automatic buttoning, I would advise you to either go to a seamstress (between 0.50 and 2 euros for a buttoning) or to opt for push buttons.

Personally, with my tiny Brother sewing machine I made all the buttonholes of the prototypes for the shooting, that is to say 184 buttonholes and the equivalent amount in buttons (without counting the muslins). I am still alive ;-)

I am looking forward to finding a bit of time to make myself a midi dress version, dolman sleeves and rounded collar with a nice tencel from Les Coupons Saint-Pierre and pearly push buttons. I also have a version in process with a dotted chambray from Les Tissus du Chien Vert. For this version, I have extended the sleeves and made the design half a size bigger (you only have to trace between the sizes) in order to slip a top underneath during mid-season or for winter.

And you, what are your plans for Jolene?
