How to lengthen Jazz sleeves

list In Alterations & Pattern hackings On

We love the nice bishop or short sleeves of the Jazz jumpsuit/dress but what if you want to wear that jumpsuit for winter? Rather than wait for summer, try lengthening the sleeves! It is surprisingly simple to draft a long sleeve for Jazz — you will be wearing your new garment before you know it!

For this pattern hacking you'll need to copy the short sleeve pattern piece E'. All seam allowances are included. The Jazz pattern has a 1 cm seam allowance everywhere except for the side seams of the sleeve.

Step 1:

Draw a line of 59 cm from the sleeve head, parallel to the grainline.

Step 2:

Find your wrist circumference by measuring around your wrist, at the point where a standard long sleeve would end. Take a flexible measuring tape and wrap it around your wrist, but not too tight! Make sure you take your hand in and off. Add 7 cm of ease to gather the sleeve ( 5 cm for gathering and and 3 cm of seam allowances).

Step 3:

Draw the wirst line perpendicular to the sleeve length line and centered.

Step 4:

Redraw the seams of your sleeve by drawing a straight line from the edge of the sleeve head down to the wrist line.

Step 5:

The cuff band must be 3 cm shorter than the wrist line. You can copy the cuff band F and cut it at the right length.

That's it! You've now made a long sleeve pattern with seam allowances included to match your Jazz. Follow the bishop sleeves instructions to sew you new sleeves and cuff. Be sure and make a draft version out of muslin or other inexpensive material to test the fit before you cut into your favorite fabrics.

I hope this tutorial will be useful to help you make your dream Jazz jumpsuit/dress!
